All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

The majority of the coastal areas of Heard Island have had their vegetation mapped using orthophotos (HI_VEG_ORTHO_VEGMAP). For the remaining areas, five sets of shapefiles cover the vegetation mapping for five small areas in the Atlas Cove/north coast region: Pageos Moraine/Kildalkey Head, Azorella Peninsula, Hoseason Beach, Saddle Point and Cape Bidlingmaier. These areas were poorly covered by aerial photography, and their vegetation was mapped at low resolution using five separate non-rectified airphotos and satellite images - hence not able to be included as part of the Heard Island georeferenced vegetation dataset. This will be fixed and the data amended. Until this time, the data represent an 'interim' situation of low resolution vegetation mapping for these areas.

For each of the five areas there are four shapefiles covering vegetation polygons, 35mm photo locations, aerial photos or satellite images used, and reliability. There is also a folder containing 64 x 35mm scanned photos which were used when vegetation mapping (as in HI_VEG_PHOTOS_VEGMAP).

Quality

The images used for vegetation mapping are not georeferenced, therefore neither the images nor the data can currently be included in the Heard Island georeferenced vegetation dataset. This will be fixed and the data amended. Until this time, the data represent an 'interim' situation of low-resolution vegetation mapping for these areas.

Resolution of the 1987 aerial photography used for Hoseason Beach is good, but is poorer for the 1980 aerial photograph used for Saddle Point. Resolution and accuracy of vegetation mapping for Azorella Peninsula, Pageos Moraine and Cape Bidlingmaier using satellite images is poor. The mapping, done with the aid of 35mm photos and field notes, gives a general impression only at this stage. No accurate field mapping overlays exist, as there is no aerial photo coverage of these areas. Improvement in resolution of the vegetation mapping must wait until more suitable coverage becomes available.
