All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

This data set includes revisions of coastline data for the Holme Bay region and approaches to Mawson.
Revised data were generated by digitising coastline and associated features from newly available satellite imagery that was predominantly ice free. In ice-free imagery, island coastlines could be clearly delineated and it was also possible to see marine near-surface features in some areas e.g. submerged rock.

Digitising work in ArcGIS Pro included modifying or replacing coastal features to match the new ice-free imagery as well as expanding the dataset to include missing features e.g. smaller islands/rocks and near-surface features.

Some satellite images that did have sea ice were also used to confirm the presence of smaller features such as offshore/near-surface rocks, as disruptions in the sea ice surface caused by these features were clearly visible.

Satellite images used are noted in the 'SOURCE' field in the data set. The data is available as a polygon feature class in a GeoPackage.
Coordinate system used for this region was WGS1984 UTM Zone 41S.

Purpose

In order to support the production of an updated AUS600 Approaches to Mawson navigation chart, more comprehensive and better resolution data of the Holme Bay coastline in proximity to Mawson station was required.

A number of issues were identified in the previous GIS coastline data. These issues arose primarily as a result of digitising from satellite imagery that had snow and/or ice present on landforms or as sea ice, which considerably altered the visibility of coastlines, offshore rock and near-surface marine features. Subsequently, the older GIS data does not closely match some exposed rock areas and smaller features that are clearly visible in the newer imagery.

Accurate mapping of this coastline is important as this area serves as an approach path for resupply vessels to Mawson station and the use of other smaller transport and scientific vessels is frequent in the approach path and around surrounding islands.

Revised data will improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the coastline data set for the Holme Bay region.

Quality

The coastline was digitised at a resolution of 1:1000.

GeoPackage (GPKG) is an open, non-proprietary, platform-independent and standards-based data format for geographic information systems built as a set of conventions over a SQLite database. Defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).
