All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
Digital Photogrammetric Map Data of the Platcha Region taken from 1:8000, January 1998 aerial photography. Data Layers include coast, contour, dyke, lakes, spot_ht, topoline, topopoly and toposurf.
These data were collected in order to study the site for the potential location of a wind turbine.
Data was mapped from 1:8000-colour aerial photography captured on 31 January 1998. Photography controlled from surveyed ground points supplied by AAD. Photo Control accuracy is 0.1% of flying height or better. The data were captured using a Zeiss P2 analytical stereo plotter and Microstation version 5 on a Universal Transverse Mercator grid. The polygon data were edited, cleaned and polygonized using Arc/Info. Maximum fuzzy tolerance for cleaning was 0.01 metres. The data were also generalised using a tolerance of 0.01 metres. All attributes (feature classifications and heights) were derived from the aerial photography.
The value tests for the data set included a test for spatial accuracy and data completeness (including line and point errors), a test of valid values against the data model and a visual check to hard copy material.
All lake boundaries and the entire coastline were mapped along with other listed features. Listed features include boundaries of bedrock, scree, continental ice, rock and ice cliffs, streams, lakes, melt lakes, melt streams, refuges, ridge lines, spot heights and snow covered areas.
Data stored as Arc/Info coverages and export files and ASCII files. Stored as geographicals with a projection file. ASCII files are available from the web. Conditions apply.
