Discovered during Deutsche Antarktische Expedition 1911/12 under Wilhelm Filchner; named at the first 'Land in sight' on 1912-JAN-30.
Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm von Bayern (1821-1912), Prinzregent of Bavaria from 1886 to 1912, promoter of the expedition.
