SW end of Charlotte Bay, Danco Coast, S of Boxing Island, was photographed from the air by FIDASE, 1956-57, and surveyed from the ground by FIDS from "Portal Point", 1957-59; in association with the names of pioneers of aviation grouped in this area, named after Henri Giffard (1825-82), French engineer who constructed and flew the first truly navigable balloon (dirigible airship) in 1852 (APC, 1960, p.4; BA chart 3566, 25.viii.1961). Gifford [sic] Cove (USOO chart 6945, 1963).
