Origin

This name originates from China. It is part of the China Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

Originally it was an island located in the north of Yuanyang Qundao. During 2007-2008 International Polar Year, Chinese 24th CHINARE bombed the island. The outer edge of the seaward side has reinforced concrete, which took two months to build. It was at last officially completed in 2008 2 May 24th and named Xiongmao Matou. It was named after the IPY core program, PANDA program. Xiongmao Matou is now the most pefectly built pier among all those in Larsemann Hills. It got its name in 2008 from 24th CHINARE.
