Origin

This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

An island in the Mackellar Islands lying to the north and north-west of Cape Denison, on the coast of George V Land. Discovered by AAE (1911-14) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named the group of islands after C.D. Mackellar of London, a patron of the expedition.

Named For

Lassesen Island was named in 2017 after the dog donated by explorer Roald Amundsen to the AAE, a namesake for his favourite dog that reached the South Pole but died on the return journey.
