Feature type: Shoal
This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer.
A line of shallow water near Heard Island on which the sea breaks in rough weather. The shoal area extends about 5 kilometres north-east from Spit Point. During the Patanella Expedition, 1965 Tilman, the master of the Patanella, crossed these shoals close inshore to Spit Point during a period of calm weather. The name is proposed in recognition of expertise shown by Tilman as master of the vessel in successfully sailing the ship from Australia to Heard Island and back during that expedition.
W (Bill) Tilman was a well known British mountaineer and explorer who died at sea in 1979.
