This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer.
The hill is named after Gordon Maxwell, master of the MV Cape Pillar during the 1980 Natmap Heard Island Expedition. The highest feature on McDonald Island at about 220 metres. It is centrally placed in the high southern part of the Island. A small cairn was built on the summit of this hill during the 1980 Natmap Expedition and a JMR (Doppler Satellite) survey station established on a high shoulder of the hill. Location of the hill changed after the 2003 eruption.
