Descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1837-1840, al mando de Dumont D'Urville, quien la llamó "Astrolabe" por el nombre de la nave insignia de la expedición. El nombre actual es una traducción al castellano del nombre original, para evitar confusión con el islote Astrolabe en el estrecho De Gerlache, y ha figurado en las cartas chilenas desde 1947. En algunas cartas de 1956 figuró con su nombre original. Isla de aproximadamente 3 millas de largo y 460 metros de elevación, situada en el estrecho Bransfield, a 20 millas al W del cabo Legoupil y a 16 millas al NE del cabo Roquemaurel, costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
