Fue descubierta por el RARE, 1947-1948, al mando del capitán de fragata Finne Ronne USNR, en un vuelo a la base de Tierra de O'Higgins y a lo largo del campo de hielos Filchner. El nombre corresponde al de la esposa del comandante Finne Ronne, quien hizo importantes contribuciones al planeamiento, organización y operación de la expedición, y, además, fue la historiadora de la expedición, y sirviendo como observadora en la base mientras la expedición estuvo en terreno. Aquella porción de la Antártica que se extiende desde la base de la gran península Tierra de O'Higgins hacia el SE hasta la tierra de Coats.
