Comments

Icebird left Princes No 1 Wharf at 1710. The voyage to Casey area was rather uneventful and in moderate sea conditions. Ice conditions were bad near Casey. Moo, Thomas and Whitehouse were airlifted for Casey and exchanged for Fletcher, Harrington and O'Connor, who were going to Edgeworth David Base. Because of ice conditions it was decided to abandon Casey and proceed to Mawson ice edge, whwere passengers and cargo were discharged. The to Davis ice edge and back to Casey. Icebird then went to Snyder Rocks to leave fuel for the Edgeworth David party and repair a NDB radio beacon installed the previous year. The coastal route to the Edgeworth Davis area was not possible because of the bad ice conditions so Icebird returned to Casey for backloading and the changeover ceremony. From Casey heavy ice conditions and bad weather were met on the way to the Edgeworth David area and it was decided to abort Phase 1 of the Edgeworth David Program. Icebird left the area and returned to Hobart in moderate to rough following seas.
