Changeover voyage
The relief of the Heard Island station. Sixteen huskies, including seven pups were loaded in Melbourne. A shortage of fresh water forced the ship to leave Heard Island for Iles Kerguelen in Feb. Two magnetic huts were erected at West Bay. Two dozen Macaroni penguins were embarked for an experiment in controlled migration. The ship suffered a succession of mechanical problems on the voyage and both boilers lost steam on the 27 Feb. Extensive damage on the homeward voyage required Labuan to be towed 300 km to Fremantle by the Karangi. The vessel was then withdrawn from service by the RAN.
