Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1996 after Robert A. Wharton, Jr., biologist, Desert Research Institute (Reno, NV), principal investigator in the first Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in McMurdo Dry Valleys, who had conducted pioneering research with microbial mats in Lake Hoare from 1978.
