En diciembre de 1928, fue avistada desde el aire por Sir Hubert Wilkins. Su nombre (Sendero en Español) fue denominado por el Comité de Nombres Antárticos de los EE.UU., porque en esta parte se reduce apenas 20 millas el ancho de la península Tierra de O'Higgins, formando una ruta natural entre bahía Neny por el W y la costa E de la península. Ensenada que se abre entre el cabo Freeman y la península Joerg, que cierra por el SE, en la costa E de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. En la entrada de la ensenada, el campo de hielo que la cubre tiene una altura de 75 metros sobre el nivel del mar, al fondo del saco su altura es de 107 metros.
