Comments

Nanok S left Hobart with cargo essentially designed for a fly-off from the Casey ice edge. However some heavier items were loaded in the hope ice conditions at the station would permit them being discharged, thus releasing the pressure for cargo space on later voyages. The ship also carried 14 members of Casey 1984, 5 members of the summer works and scientific party, and 2 members of the airfield feasibility party. Only moderate pack ice was met, and the ice edge was reached on the mornong of the 24 Novenber. The sae ice extended only 400 m from the summer coastline into the bay where anchorage is normally made. The two newly acquired Hagglund vehicles that were part of the ship's cargo were used - instead of the embarked helicopters - for unloading over the sea ice. This was a most successful operation. Two aluminium barges and two sections of a Pioneer over-snow vehicle presented a greater problem to get ashore, as the ice was only 30 cm thick. The barges, each loaded with one section, were anchored in the small bay next to the disused Wilkes Station some 3 km north of Casey and transferred to Casey on 10 Dec after all ice had broken out of the bay. Two of the three helicopters embarked on the ship were left at Casey to support the summer glaciological program. Weather throughout the unloading was ideal and the ship left for Melbourne on 26 Nov.
