Comments

This voyage to Heard Island, Mawson and Davis had to return to Albany on 14 Jan with a passenger suffering appendicitis. A summer party of six men led by Grahame Murray Budd were on Heard Island from 28 Jan to 9 Mar 1963. The Spit Bay climbing party made an unsuccessful attempt to climb Big Ben. At Heard Island note was made of the accentuated glacial recession and the rapid deterioration of the station buildings which had been broken into by seals. A rendezvous was made with the Glacier on 26 Feb to transfer a sick seaman for treatment. An attempt to reach Wilkes after leaving Davis was abandoned due to heavy ice conditions, resulting in the over-wintering of a summer expeditioner. Heard Island and Iles Kerguelen were visited on the return journey.
