The ship was farewelled by Mr Smith Curry, Secretary, Department of Supply. Pack ice conditions were similar to those that delayed the ship in 1971, and helicopters were used to find a passage. Army LARCs were used exclusively for amphibious transport. A Hubner was withdrawn from Macquarie Island.
