The track taken by the ship was about 60 nautical miles east of the normal track to allow magnetic observations to be made with the towed magnetometer, installed and operated by the University of NSW. Strong winds forced the ship to cruise up and down the east coast on three occasions. Scientific parties concentrated on short summer projects
