Nanok S left Hobart to take 30 expeditioners and cargo, including bulk fuel, to Casey and Davis and return some 1983 expeditioners to Melbourne. Outward-bound passengers included members of Casey 1984, the airfield investigation teams for both stations, the Army LARC detachment and round-trippers from the Department of Housing and Construction, the Department of Aviation and the Antarctic Division. The ship arrived at Casey on 27 Dec. Mostly favourable weather enabled unlosding to be completed by 2 Jan with loss of only one day due to high winds. New Year was celebrated in style at the station and on Nanok S. The official change-over of the 1983 and 1984 parties was on 3 Jan, and the ship left the same day. Small amounts of pack-ice were met. In Prydz Bay heavy belts of pack-ice and large floating icebergs, probably oroginating from the West Ice Shelf, forced the ship to detour to the west and approach Davis from the north-west. Davis ice edge was reached on 8 Jan and Nanok S tied up to the fast ice near Gardner Island, some 3.5 km from Davis. Most cargo was unloaded on to the sea ice and ferried ashore by helicopters. Twi large seatainers and some other heavy cargo were deposited on a nearby island by barge for later retrieval. All available lengths of plastic pipe at the atation had to be joined to enable the construction of a pipeline sufficiently long to discharge bulk fuel from the ship. Unloading was completed by 11 Jan and the ship left Davis late that day. On 13 Jan Nanok S rendezvoused with Nella Dan on its way to Davis, and mail and greetings were exchanged. Nanok S arrived in melbourne on 24 Jan. Source: Antarctic Division Annual Review, 1983-84
