Hit rock off Mawson
The bulk of the cargo was loaded in Melbourne. Excellent weather and no difficulties with ice ensured a record passage time to Casey of less than 7 days. Lady Franklin was still backloading at Casey when Nanok S arrived. Unloading of about 260 tonnes of cargo did not begin in earnest until 10 Feb, after Lady Franklin had sailed. Continuing reasonable weather and ice conditions led to no delays in unloading at Casey, the voyage to Davis, or unloading at Davis. About 400 tonnes of dry cargo and 150 000 l of fuel were unloaded at Davis and about 100 tonnes of cargo backloaded for trans-shipment to Mawson or return to Australia. Nineteen expeditioners boarded the ship at Davis. Good weather continued on the passage to Mawson and again there was no difficulty with ice. At Mawson 300 tonnes of dry cargo and 250 000 l of fuel were unloaded and about 100 tonnes of cargo backloaded, with a one-day blixzzard delaying operations. Four Mawson expeditioners and the four-man Army LARC detachment joined the ship for return to Australia. Shortly after leaving Mawson on 26 Feb, Nanok S hit an uncharted submerged rock. This caused some damage to the double bottom tanks and the loss of about 60 tonnes of bunker oil. Although there was no danger to passengers or crew, the ship had to return to Mawson for a diving inspection of the hull, and to take on additional fuel to ensure adequate bunkers for the return voyage. The ship was off charter during this delay. Nanok S left Mawson again in the evening of 28 Feb. Bad weather caused some delays, but the ship berthed in Hobart on 12 Mar to complete it 1983-84 operations. Source: Antarctic Division Annual Review 1983-84
