Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache. El nombre se le dio por el apellido del representante de la Expedición Antártica Belga en Noruega. Isla de aproximadamente 5,3 millas de largo por unas 3 millas de ancho, situada al S de la isla Lemaire y centrada a 7 millas al SW del cabo Lacaze Duthiers, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
