The W mountain chain of Petermannketten, comprising vestre Petermannkjeda and Zwieselberg, ranging from Felsinsel in the N to the valley Aurdalen and to Grabenhorn and Skeidskneet in the S, Wohlthatmassiv, Fimbulheimen, Neuschwabenland, Dronning Maud Land. The S part of Westliche Petermannkette, covering Zwieselberg and Grabenhorn, was named by a Soviet expedition 1960/61 as hrebet Vil'gel'ma Pika (translated German name as used bei GDR-scientists: Wilhelm-Pieck-Rücken) after the GDR-President Wilhelm Pieck (Norwegian name Pieckryggen). Discovered during German Antarctic Expedition 1938/39 ('Neuschwabenland-Expedition') under Alfred Ritscher.
August Heinrich Petermann (1822-1878), German geographer, cartographer and publisher of the geographic journal 'Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen'.
