A bay about 24 km wide in the most westerly part of the Amery Ice Shelf. The bay was plotted by radar by the ANARE Expedition on the MVNella Dan in 1965 and again in 1968. The name MacKenzie Sea was applied by Sir Douglas Mawson to a large embayment between the western side of the Amery Ice Shelf and Cape Darnley. Break-out of a large part of the Amery Ice Shelf in 1964 caused a drastic reduction in the size of the Bay. Named by Sir Douglas Mawson, leader of BANZARE (1929-31) after Captain K.N. MacKenzie, master of the expedition''s ship Discovery in 1930-31. |

Later exploration, especially that by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-37) and ANARE (1956-61) has shown the bay to be less extensive than plotted by BANZARE. Named by Sir Douglas Mawson after the vessel in which Peter Kemp first sighted land in this vicinity in 1833. |
