Named by USACAN after Dr A. Stevenson, economic adviser to the US House of Representatives Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce and author of a report for the Committee on the IGY in the Arctic and Antarctic. |

The bank was discovered on 9 January 1934 by the Norwegian whale factory ship Solglimt, which found the bottom shelved steeply from 5,100 to 310 m.
