Search Antarctic Names

A nunatak in the central part of the Manning Nunataks in the south-east part of the Amery Ice Shelf. The Manning Nunataks were photographed by ANARE aircraft in 1957. This feature was visited by a geological party from the Soviet Antarctic Expedition on New Year's Day 1966. New Year Nunatak was used as a survey station during the Prince Charles Mountains Survey by ANARE in 1969.

A pass to the south of the Queen Elizabeth Range (Ross Dependency). This pass was used on New Year's Day, 1958, by a New Zealand party of the TAE (1956-58) to get from the Marsh Glacier to the high basin overlooking the Bowden Nivi (Ross Dependency).

A bay on the Budd Coast, between Clark Peninsula and Bailey Peninsula. Plotted from air photographs taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47). Named by USACAN after Lieutenant R.C. Newcomb, USN, navigator of the USS Glacier and a member of a survey party which charted this bay in February, 1957.  

A group of nunataks about 19 km west of Aker Peaks, Enderby Land. Plotted from air photographs taken by ANARE in 1956 and 1960. Named after A.J. Newman, senior diesel mechanic at Mawson in 1961.

A shoal with depths of two metres or less about 2 km from Anchorage Island beacon, Vestfold Hills, bearing 205. The shoal extends over an area 330 m long (in a ENE-WSW direction) and 90 m wide, with a least depth of two metres. Charted in February, 1961 by d' A. T. Gale, hydrographic surveyor with the ANARE Expedition on the MV Thala Dan led by D.F. Styles.

A line of rocky peaks about 46 km south-west of Magnet Bay in Kemp Land. Discovered on 12 January, 1930, by BANZARE (1929-31) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named them after G.R. Nicholas of Melbourne, a patron of the expedition.

An island just north-west of Casey station on Bailey Peninsula, Windmill Islands. Three bollards on the eastern end of the island are used to moor ship unloading bulk fuel at Casey. Named after R.T. Nicholson, senior carpenter, who took a leading part in the construction of Casey during 1966 and who was in charge of the construction party in 1968.  

A broad, ice-covered peninsula, partly in the Ross Dependency, about 22 km long between Cousens Bay and Matterson Inlet. Mapped from air photographs taken by the US Navy.

A prominent, steep-sided rock island in Sandefjord Bay, about 24 km WNW of Mount Caroline Mikkelseen. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-37) and called Instøy (Inner Island). The island was visited many times by members of the ANARE Amery Ice Shelf party and the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains party in January-February, 1969. Named after A H F Nickols, electronics engineer with the Amery Ice Shelf party (1968).

A small island, just south of Holl Island in the Windmill Islands. Plotted from air photographs taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47). The term island is considered more appropriate than rock. Named after G.W. Niles, a member of both Operation Highjump and USN Operation Windmill (1947-48).  

A small bay just west of the Strahan Glacier on the Lars Christensen Coast of Mac.Robertson Land. Discovered by BANZARE (1929-31) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named it after the master of the Norwegian whaler Sir James Clark Ross which transported coal to Antarctic waters for the Discovery. On the map published in the Geographic Journal of August, 1932, a wide bay between Cape Daly and the Strahan Glacier is called Nielsen Bay. Recent examination of Sir Douglas Mawson's notes shows that the bay was placed too far west and the name mis-spelt.

A group of three fairly low rock outcrops enclosing a melt lake, in the Prince Charles Mountains. Plotted from air photographs taken by ANARE aircraft in 1956. Named after C.S. Nilsson, physicist at Mawson in 1957.

An ice stream trending northwards across the Polar Plateau for about 95 km before discharging into the Nimrod Glacier. Discovered by the northern party of the New Zealand Geological and survey Antarctic Expedition (1961-62). Named from the Nimrod Glacier.

A colony of emperor penguins that establishes among small icebergs on the fast ice north of Ninnis Bank and east of Mertz Depression, George V Coast, George V Land. It was discovered by BAS in a satellite image taken in 2019. Note: emperor penguin colonies may not remain in one fixed location.

A glacier, descending steeply into the sea from the high interior of George V Land. Discovered by AAE (1911-14) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named it after Lieut. B.E.S. Ninnis, RF, a member of the expedition, who lost his life during the far-east sledge journey.

A snow-covered ridge in the Goodspeed Nunataks, southern Prince Charles Mountains, about 9 km east of Skinner Nunatak. First sighted by an ANARE seismic traverse party in 1957. Photographed by ANARE in 1958 and 1960. Named after R.S. Noble, weather observer at Mawson in 1971, a member of the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains survey party in 1972.

A tributary glacier of the Tomilin Glacier in Oates Land. Mapped from air photographed taken by the US Navy. Named after Maj. E.P. Noll, USMC, aircraft commander during US Operation Deepfreeze 68.

Small sheltered island located in the north-western corner of Stephenson Lagoon underneath steep rocky slopes. The island is largely protected from the strong prevailing westerly winds that predominate at Heard Island.

A cove on Clark Peninsula, just south of the station area at Wilkes. The area was photographed by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47), ANARE (1956) and the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956). Included in a ground survey by C.R. Eklund in 1957. Named by USACAN after photographer's mate P.F. Noonan, USN a member of the Wilkes station party in 1957.  

The western of two islands just north of Falla Bluff in Mac.Robertson Land. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-37) and called Stedet (The Place).
